Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Phillip Rehfeldt has assembled techniques of dealing with clarinet performance as they have evolved since 1950. He catalogs contemporary practices that differ from those formerly standardized, provides perspectives on performance capabilities, and includes suggestions for performance based on his own experience. The new edition has been completely rewritten, corrected where necessary, and updated. Rehfeldt has added the complete list of William O. Smith's clarinet compositions and recordings to his previous listing of Smith's early multiphonic fingerings. The new edition also includes an appendix containing Eric Mandat's quarter-tone fingerings; a second music bibliography, the "International Update"; and an updated bibliography of music literature.

5 out of 5 stars For composers AND clarinet players   October 18, 2001

Phil Rehfeldt's "New Directions for Clarinet" is a great resource for any composer or performer interested in extended clarinet techniques. I've used it a number of times to find the fingerings for multiphonics when writing clarinet pieces. Although the book was written several years ago, it remains an important work for anyone interested in exploring the vast possibilites of the clarinet. I highly recommend it.

This book is the most amazing book I have come across, so far, that deals with Contemeporary Clarinet. It has an extensive finger chart for all clarinets and covers mutiphonics and quarter tone notes as well. Extensive Bibliography and works index.

A must for all serious clarinettists.
