1 out of 5 stars Did not meet my expectation   December 23, 2008

I've purchased other books from Ed Roscetti and found them outstanding (Blues and Funk Drumming). This book fell way short of my expectations. Like his other books, I was hoping that he would provide several sample drum beats in the various odd meters. Instead, he leaves you hanging and expects you to make them up all on your own. This book is suited for the working muscian with an established mental library of beats to draw from.

I'm a 40 something average Joe. My learning curve is best served by examples to follow/modify. No time to be creative.

5 out of 5 stars Only for those who call themselves musicians   December 18, 2006

As a drummer in a progressive band, I'm always working to improve my playing in odd time signatures. This book has proved incredibly helpful in developing my musical vocabulary.

The book breaks each time signature down into several sections. It starts with simple patterns played by your hands, then on a snare, then on a snare with ostinato bass drum parts. Once these simple exercises are mastered at various tempi, the book takes a small number of examples and places them on the drum set. Each time signature has several drum set playing examples and a song chart. Each exercise and song is on a CD that comes with the book; each exercise is played twice through and each song has a version with drums and a version without that can be played with.

If terms such as ostinato confuse you, or you don't know what a song chart is or how to read it, this book is probably not for you. Odd time signatures cannot be learned overnight; only those with the mindset of a serious musician who are willing to invest time following the directions exactly will learn from this book. The author also expects whoever is using this book to write out their own riffs in each time signature, and to apply those riffs to drum set. This is an essential part of the book; it makes the student think of odd time signatures both technically and as grooves, and allows the student to develop their own drum parts.

With that said, if you are willing to invest the time in this book and want to learn, it is essential to have in your library. I've only reached the 7/8 section of the book, and already I can write out my own, fluent drum set parts in odd times, then transfer the notes on a page into an interesting and fun groove.
