1 out of 5 stars Good?   September 23, 2008
I just wonder one thing..... all of you people who thinks this book is good and that it gives a true account of what really happened, don't you think it's quite telling that the only one who has NOT written a book on Freddie is Mary Austin? She is the only one who has actually kept the secrecy he wanted and not tried to cash in. I first thought that it might be intresting to read this book because I am a big fan, but I later realised that if I truly admire his music and his creativity, I don't need to know everything about his private life. And if you truly love someone, you don't have to go and write a book about them splashing out all horrible details about them. Jim did obviously not like the fact that the house went to Mary and that the place of his burial was left only to her, but he must have known that she would be the only one to honour his wishes and she has, his other "friends" and lovers more than ready to share everything intimate.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I Could Read This Book   August 14, 2008
I really want to read this book...but I just can't see spending a hundred dollars on a book! I wish I could find it for a cheaper price!

( I gave it five stars so that I could get this review in. I really have no idea how many stars the book deserves, because it's way too expensive to purchase!)

4 out of 5 stars Mercury and Me! Me! Me!   April 15, 2008

First off, I have to say I give this book only four stars because I believe it has elements of dishonesty.(I will go into that at the end of this review) This book seemed to be all about the Me(Hutton), trying to prove to the reader that he was the good guy in the relationship. That he suffered being the background lover to a rock star diva. Which is not true. It is obvious that Freddie Mercury deeply cared about those around him. Time has shown that most of those whom he was so close to did not continue their loyalty after he passed away. Freddie Mercury was human. He had flaws like all of us. Out of all the books I have read on Freddie, this book while at times moving was the most depressing. I know his death forever changed the world. But I would have liked to have seen those who said they cared about him be mature enough to carry on with dignity as he did in life. What this book does show, is that death, money are often the true reason why people react selfishly many times. One thing they all should have taken away from his death was to be generous, not just with money but with your heart. Freddie lavished them with extravagant gifts, yet he was really saying just love me for who I am, not for what the world wants me to be. To love someone behind the scenes, without expectation. I am sick to think that Jim felt slighted in what he called being made homeless by Mary; When in fact, Freddie had already paid for Hutton's home in Ireland before he died. On top of that he was given 500,000 GBP. Also Freddie bought Joe a home in London and left him the same amount. Peter aka: Phoebe, was also given the same amount of money. I found Peter's book aptly titled "Freddie Mercury, An Intimate Memoir of the Man who knew him best," to be the best book of the all of them. I felt he didn't drop names or tell any secrets that Freddie would have not approved. I think out of all the people who interacted with Freddie, the most insightful person was Peter Freestone. Many of those at the end, Mary, Joe and Jim all had intimate relationships with Freddie and one time or another. Mary and Jim were clearly vying for Freddie's attention. In the end time has shown Mary although her reaction wasn't exactly stellar, she has proven to be a true friend. She was there when he was Farokkh Bulsara, a struggling artist and she was there in the end, when he died as Freddie Mercury, the world's most unique rock star and friend. It was said in the book that Jim was told along with Mary that Freddie said he wanted his ashes buried under the cherry tree at Garden Lodge. I do not in any way believe Jim Hutton's account on this story. One thing in life Freddie hated more than anything was being seen by prying eyes of Paparazzi. He said he wanted to rest in peace. I know that Jim's account is not true. Mary said he told her, I just want to rest in peace, not to be dug up by anyone. I think in the end his intuition to leave Mary to secretly disperse of his ashes showed Freddie's depth in knowing people's motivations. He knew Mary would honor his wishes and she continues this day preserving his legacy with dignity and trust. I think this book is still a must read for all Freddie fans. But it left me feeling empty in the end. Maybe as a fan I received closure, and it was often difficult. Unlike most people who had problems about the deathbed scenes in the book, I think people who care for AIDS patients and the rest of the world need to see the devastation AIDS has brought to our world. In reading about Freddie's suffering, it humanizies him and tells people to we need to fight together to support our family, friends and colleagues who may be affected. Freddie Mercury's suffering showed ordinary people, they need not feel alone in their illness. I do suggest you buy this book. You won't be sorry, but it will leave you feeling uncertain as to where the real truth lies.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I ever read...really   June 29, 2007
What a book. It's the kind of book that you feel like you are there with them and you live it. Jim Hutton was extremely generous sharing this wonderful story with us. I do wonder if Freddie would have approved I think not. But the love Jim had for Freddie is lovingly poured into this book. Mary's cold and rude behavior at the end to me is unforgiveable. What a shame. Her true self came through and I felt Freddie would have never forgiven her for it. Jilted lovers, YUK. Anyways a great read and worth every cent and then some...
