Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This book introduces all the features of Apple Logic, but never loses sight of your objective--using the program to make great music. Apple Logic is often considered to be a complicated program, but by taking a step by step 'logical' approach, the book makes it easy to use the program's features to the full.

It describes the installation of the program, gives a practical introduction to setting up and using Logic and leads you through your first recording. It describes how to use the Arrange page, the Event list, Matrix, Audio and Hyper editors and how to use the Score editor to print out your music.

There are sections on audio and MIDI recording and editing, mixing, Virtual instruments and effects, mastering, effects plug-ins and audio processing. There are chapters on choosing and using MIDI and audio interfaces and choosing the right hardware.

In short it's all you need to get up and running with Apple Logic!

Stephen Bennett is a composer and post-production engineer who uses Logic every day. This is the book he wishes had been available when he first got to grips with the fascinating software that is Logic.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible for composers   October 27, 2007

You would think that since the author is a composer, that this book would be helpful to composers. I am beginning a graduate film scoring program, and I bought this book to help teach myself Logic, but now I will just have to pay someone to teach it to me. Although there is a good bit of discussion of MIDI, the book doesn't really explain anything -- it gives you just enough information to see what kinds of things are possible, and that's it. Seriously, the manual that comes with Logic is WAY better (although that hasn't really fulfilled my needs either), and explains things in MUCH more depth than this book. Save your money.

3 out of 5 stars A catalog, not a textbook.   April 12, 2007

For the price, this book may serve you well as a -reference- to using Logic. But if you need something to help you climb the learning curve, look elsewhere.

There are lots of useful pointers and explorations of major features. They are illustrated with low-contrast grey screenshots. Furthermore, the book is *not* organized for newcomers. Briefly, it's a catalog, not a textbook.

On the other hand you could spend a lot more and not do much better ... because the other books aren't much better.

3 out of 5 stars Good for basic things... very focused on MIDI   November 10, 2006

If you are looking to use MIDI with Logic Pro or Logic Express, this book will be extremely helpful. Almost all of the meaty, in-depth sections are centered around software instrument manipulation, significant in-depth information about MIDI "sends" and the like. For this type of purpose, the book is pretty good.

If you're interested in dealing with "real" instruments (piped-in guitars, microphone-based sound, and other analog inputs), the book is very thin.

The book is highly focused on Pro (as the title indicates). If you're using Express, you'll have to be selective about what you read and choose to "try out."

I did learn quite a bit about Logic Pro from this book. Although the instructions were sometimes laborious and esoteric, I did get a better handle on using the UI artifacts in Logic.

That said, remember that although Logic Pro is an industry standard and is one of the leading recording software packages - it is not for the faint of heart or the computer-phobic. Logic Pro is to GarageBand (for example) as Photoshop is to MS Paint and Quark is to Notepad.

5 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO THE MUSIC!   August 5, 2006

Are you a programmer who wants to create music? If you do, then this book is for you! Author Stephen Bennett, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows you how Logic Pro tightly integrates MIDI, Virtual instrument, audio recording and virtual plug-in processing for every day use.

Bennett, begins with an overview of Logic Pro. Then, the author details how you can install Logic. Next, he takes you through getting Logic Pro to work with your MIDI and audio equipment and suggests some tips to help you make the most of the program. The author then takes you through your first recording and then from there and on to the editing and mixing of the MIDI, Audio and Virtual instrument recordings. He continues by dealing with the basics of the Score editor, and tips on how to make the output of the Score Editor useful to other musicians. Then, the author shows you an overview of the Arrange page. Next, he shows you all of the on screen variations possible with the Transport bar. The author then shows you all of the note data displayed in the Matrix editor from the "Piano" selected region. He continues by showing you the types of data Logic Pro can record, display and edit. He also shows you a typical Hyper edit window. Then the author shows you the Key commands window. Next, he details the Audio window and the Sample editor. The author continues with an overview of Global tracks. Then, he shows you all of the objects you can create in Logic Pro. Next, the author shows you some of the range of plug-ins currently supplied with Logic Pro. The author then gives you some tips on using Logic Pro for mixing your recordings, and then mastering the resulting mixes. Finally, he covers other Logic Pro useful information.

This most excellent book also contains some high quality real time "plug-ins." More importantly, this book shows you how Logic Pro shields you from the Environment as much as possible by making the program easier than ever to use.
