Album Description
Guitarist Robin Trower's watershed sophomore solo disc remains his most stunning, representative, and consistent collection of tunes. This 24-bit digitally remastered 25th anniversary reissue, which tacks on five live tracks adding nearly 25 minutes to the original playing time, actually improves upon the original. Mixing obvious Hendrix influences with blues and psychedelia, then adding the immensely soulful vocals of James Dewer, Robin Trower pushed the often limited boundaries of the power trio concept into refreshing new waters. The concept gels best in the first track, "Day of the Eagle," where the opening riff rocking morphs into the dreamy washes of gooey guitar chords that characterize the album's distinctive title track that follows.

Dreamy and Powerful November 16, 2008
Robin Trower is a man who really understood music. Formally in Procol Harum which was known for its classical influences, and its helping hand in establishing what would be known as progressive rock. After joining a short lived super group (Jude), Trower finally released a solo album "Twice Removed From Yesterday" in 1973. Now we advance a year further and "Bridge of Sighs" is finally released.
Bridge of Sighs opens with "Day of The Eagle", a track that's fiery and definitely Hendrix influenced. While similar guitar wise with the bluesy funky chords, one can notice strong vocal differences. The actual track "Bridge of Sighs" opens with a jingly sound leading to a warm euphoric guitar. So calming and memorable of a track. "In This Place" is just as dreamy, but with more complex guitar. Bits of the vocal melody remind me of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" from their 1970 hit album "Paranoid".
The album swings back into gear with the rocking "The Fool and Me". "Too Rolling Stoned" just grooves from the dry drum and tight single coil strat sounding intro, to the later wah licks. The song is long and fairly progressive. I swear I hear ambient voices in the last minute of the song, could never really decipher it. The guitar tone is just astounding, and how the bends and vibratos sound, this album really speaks.
Robin Trower-Bridge of Sighs, a must buy. Bluesy and rocking, an album with strong variety. Slow progressing tunes and rocking gems, an album that can't be forgotten once herd.
Excellent Purchase August 16, 2008
I have always liked this CD.....but only had it on cassette tape. The CD format is much better, it includes extra outtake of some of the songs.
The quintessential 70's rock album. August 5, 2008
If you're a fan of 70's guitar-driven rock, you must have this album in your collection. "Day of the Eagle", Little Bit of Sympathy" & "Too Rolling Stoned" are standards of the genre. I'm typically either disappointed or enthralled by Trower's work, but this album goes beyond that. This is one of those iconic rock LP's like Dark Side Of The Moon, Black Sabbath, Tres Hombres or Who's Next that every classic rock fan must have. And the Bonus tracks are just that: "BONUS!"

If you like Robin Trower how could you not like "Bridge of Sighs" This has got to be thier best, just as good now as it was then. This one gets 5 stars and a recomendation.
One of Top 10 Rock CDs of All Time July 13, 2008
... in terms of combined talent and spirituality. Be sure to get this version, which is of superior sound quality to most available 70s version of the Robin Trower band releases (unless of course you can find and are ready to shell out the bucks for the limited-edition Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab gold CD version of the original LP, which sound quality and desirability for the CD collector are both extremely high).
But "Bridge of Sighs" is a classic, I'm sure the best known and celebrated worldwide of those rock CDs on my Top 10 list. James Dewar is the main attraction, actually. He was Trower's 70s vocalist and bassist. While just fine on bass, it's of course his vocals which are out of this world. He really was on the same level of vocal talent, in my book, or at least comparable, to the finest British male classic rock vocalists: Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers, Jack Bruce, and even John Lennon. Dewar has to be the most underrated male rock vocalist of all time, as again he was just stellar.
I like Bridge of Sighs also of course for Robin Trower's all over the place virtuosic guitar playing and handling of the bulk of the songwriting. The songs are the unique early 70s (at least) Trower trademark of combined hard rock, intensity, obviously secular, yet very valuing of spirituality songs. This is really adult, soul-confrontational, and inspirational and spiritual secular hard rock music. One of the Fripp's (later in King Crimson) writes a tribute to Trower on one of my CDs saying touring with him and hearing him live really saved his life or his soul or something like that.
So, if you want rock with the greatest of practically unknown today singer's vocals, and with an attitude, but a great one, buy "Bridge of Sighs" and my also-reviewed "For Earth Below/Live" CD.
