4 out of 5 stars Works Great, Some Tinkering Required   September 4, 2008

On a quest to turn my synthesizer into a midi controller for VST instruments in Acid Pro 6.0, I found this little gadget (and if you don't know what that means, you probably don't need this).

First off, Acid won't recognize the hardware without the drivers, and the included software refuses to install on a pc running Windows Vista. On the bright side, E-MU has a patch on their website under support that WILL work with Vista. After installing that, everything ran perfectly for me.

The cord's a bit short and won't wrap behind my desk, so I ordered a usb extension to avoid having to unplug it all the time. E-MU should figure out that in a home studio with speakers, guitars, and such, not every piece of equipment can get shoved into the same corner.

Yes, the midi plugs are labelled backwards. Or perhaps not, depending on how you think about it. Arrows to indicate data flow direction might have been helpful.

PROS:
Low price compared to fancier, muti-track midi converters.
Does what it says.
No noticable delay or lag, great for live recording.

CONS:
Requires patch for Vista.
Cord is only about 8 feet long.
Midi plug labels might be confusing: in = out, out = in?

5 out of 5 stars E-MU does it again   August 12, 2008

My previous MIDI interface, in the early Nineties, was through my soundcard's gamepad/serial port. After years in mothballs, I recently reassembled my equipment but couldn't get around the problem of latency with my MIDI wind-controller. I had read that USB was the norm with MIDI these days and so decided upon E-MU after reading several positive on-line reviews and factoring in cost.

The E-MU Xmidi 1x1 interface arrived in record time and was a snap to install. Now that I hear the difference in signal response from the 'old days' I'm very happy indeed. I also like that the lights in the unit tell when MIDI signal is passing through the device. It's makes troubleshooting a breeze. All-in-all, a great product that does it's job well.

2 out of 5 stars This really wasn't what I thought it was....   July 10, 2008

Well it was but it wasn't it doesn't do exactly what I thought it would do I wanted this to try to pull recorded music off my Yamaha keyboard but instead it only hooks up to a computer to record new music that you play not prerecorded stuff that you already played.

Bought this to connect a Kawai MP9000 stage piano to a macbook pro using garageband. Works perfectly!
