Comfortably Disappointed May 8, 2007 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
They're each a favorite of mine. I've seen both many times. I have the 2 collaborative CD's and have seen the show - and for the most part, the Mehldau trio is in support of Metheny. Especially on the later release tunes. Mehldau's approach in this collaboration is much different than in his trio, and the resulting music is a variation of what one would expect from a Metheny project backed by a serious trio. Nothing bad or offensive, just not a highlight for me. That paired against my hope for new ground, or old ground pushed further, or a sum greater than the parts, left me comfortably disappointed.
Better Than The First One April 27, 2007 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
The first collaboration between these label mates and jazz giants seemed a little tentative. Like both men were afraid of stepping on each other toes. It was pleasant enough but in my mind fell a little short. I'm willing to admit that my expectations from these two men are probably unreasonably high. However, outing number two seems like Pat and Brad are more comfortable with each other and have found a groove. The proceedings tend to be dominated by Pat but Brad doesn't exactly slip into the roll of sideman. He is given the opportunity to show why he's probably the best jazz pianist out there today. Pat is, well Pat. A sublime, deeply satisfying experience and the very model of understated brilliance. Cool!Metheny Mehldau Quartet
Superlative jazz(as you'd expect) April 26, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an album that fits into the Metheny quartet trifecta....Question and Answer, Like Minds, and this quartet. Simply straight ahead jazz, and not of the PMG genre, where jazz sensibilities sometimes get tested. Having seen the concert twice, i'm impressed...very listenable and expressive. All 4 artists are absolutely outstanding in their own right and they play off each other beautifully.
The chemistry is not quite there April 24, 2007 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
Let me first note that Metheny and Mehldau are two of my favorite musicians. I don't, however, find their collaboration compelling (though I do think it is perfectly pleasant). While the liner notes in the first album suggest that neither artist had to sacrifice their personal style to accomodate the other, I find that, particularly in the quartet context, too much of Mehldau's exploratory and contemplative approach is relinquished so that the trio can serve as a backdrop to Metheny's very fine but predictable structures and phrasings. This was even more evident in the recent live performance I attended. I'm glad they made these recordings. But I hope the collaboration is short-lived, as each of these artists is more in their element in other contexts.
One of Metheny's Best April 12, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Have you ever had a CD that you seem play over and over without ever getting sick of it? Well, this is one of those CDs. We own many other Pat Metheny CDs, but this quickly became a favorite.
