Exquisite, sublime January 26, 2008 The last album from a true master. Heaven has another of our truly great talents: must be a great band up there! All modern jazz fans simply must buy this, it's essential, packed with superb compositions and craftsmanship. I've played it heaps since purchased, and there's more to find on each listening. Buy now, don't wait!
Awful Album Ruined By Michael Brecker's Tone!!!! Terrible!!!! Don't Buy This One!!!! December 16, 2007 11 out of 37 found this review helpful
I personally wasn't a fan of Michael Brecker's music. Some things he's done were okay, but I guess I just never liked his approach to saxophone tone. I think the true masters of saxophone tone are Joe Lovano, Paul Desmond, Ben Webster, Ike Quebec, and a few others.
Brecker comes from the same place, tone-wise, as Jackie McLean. It's razor-sharp and penatrating. It's just not my cup of tea.
Having said that, this album isn't as good as all the other reviewers have said it is. I mean sure you've got some great musicians like Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, Brad Mehldau, etc, but this as I know now doesn't constitute a good album. What makes an album good is attention to tone, improvisations, compositions, and interplay. If none of the these elements are there, then it's not good music. Some of the more ballad type tunes on this album are okay, but again, Brecker's tone ruins what would otherwise be a gorgeous song.
This lack of attention to tone is something I will never understand. Brecker may have had great improvisational ideas, but his technique regarding placement of the lips on the mouthpiece and how to blow into the mouthpiece is something that will forever plague his recordings.
I bought this album for its historical purposes and to at least recognize that Brecker was a jazz icon who influenced many saxophonists.
To all the people who don't like my review please take into account these are my own personal opinions about this album. This has nothing to do with me liking or disliking anyone. I've been listening to jazz my whole life, so I think I'm entitled to express my own opinion about this terrible album.
Outstanding November 24, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When purchasing this CD, I thought that I would be filled with sadness, considering this was Mike's last CD, but instead the CD is such a celebration of life. Filled with incredible emotion, technical mastery, energy, playfulness, sincerity, and artistic refinement that only comes from a master at the peak of his career. Just oustanding... perhaps the finest Brecker record yet. This one has a realness of emotion - of life - coming from an artist who doesn't have anything he needs to prove. There are no 'putting on heirs' here - just beautiful honesty in beautiful music - extremely advanced, masterful, and soulful music.
A testament November 22, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What you could have better asked to hear in jazz music; excellent music, excellent performers, complete package
We miss you Michael November 12, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What can you say? Michael Brecker was truly one of the greatest saxophonists that has ever lived. He is my personal favorite, and as a tenor saxophonist, he has had a profound influence on me musically. Like many, I am very saddened by the loss of Michael, and this album is a poignant musical statement from a beautifully complex and unique spirit in his final hour. I would recommend this album, as I would any of his incredible recordings to anyone who can appreciate art of real depth and passion. Five stars are not enough...
