This is an excellent album to close Michael Brecker's brilliant career! You can almost sense that he knew it could be his last.

4 out of 5 stars Brecker shines as a composer   September 14, 2007

This last effort by sax giant Michael Brecker is a gem. The level of playing is vertiginous, but for me, the music is the real joy here. The compositions are elaborate but they get to you. The CD has been playing in my car for weeks. Each listen brings out new details, richer textures.

5 out of 5 stars Insert > Press PLAY > Press REPEAT > 7th Heaven   September 12, 2007
Since PILGRIMAGE arrived I've listened to it perhaps a hundred times. It is often on REPEAT in my car/kitchen CD player.

The more you listen, the more you hear. Pure joy.

If you've not heard of Michael Brecker but like John Coltrane or Wayne Shorter, give this man a listen. You may, as I found to be true, suddenly find yourself in possession of everything he recorded.

Also, if you're a Pat Metheny fan, you get some of PM's best playing too.

4 out of 5 stars What a group.   September 12, 2007

Michael Brecker, Accompanied by Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, and John Patitucci. How wrong can you be buying this album?
Although all compositions are by MB, and because of the strong influence of the group, you would sometime think that it could be a Herbie Hancock album or Pat Metheney or any of the others in the band. Every single track is well organized, tight, and well memorable for many years to come.
A well recommended Album; by all means.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I own!!   August 29, 2007
This cd is without doubt the best cd that I have. Every musician is at the top of their game.

Every melody is beautifully composed. Very catchy tunes and I'm constantly singing them in my head all day. I have even transcribed a few of the melodies just to figure out what is going on.

There are many highlights which include Brecker and Metheny's solo on "The Mean Time". Metheny's solos on "Anagram" and "When Can I Kiss You Again?". The duet between Brecker and DeJohnette on "Cardinal Rule". The Hancock solo on "Loose Threads". The unforgettable melodies of "Half Moon Lane" and "Pilgrimage".

Though the biggest highlight is the last chorus on the title track when the key changes and every musician is giving it everything they've got.

So in conclusion, Michael Brecker has left us with his best compositions. Everyone must hear it!!!
