I wish I had this years ago! July 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Kodaly Today is an essential book that should be in every teacher's professional library. This new innovative approach takes you students from sound to reading, writing, and improvising in music. You will find yourself doing more than just singing with this book, you will find yourself using all of your classroom resources including instruments. This book will help you lead your students to being fine musicians, as well as active listeners. The resources in the back of the book are also indispensable, with a complete curriculum plan . This book will truly help you become a better teacher!
Fantastic Resource June 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is a fantastic resource. I have been in the instrumental teaching world for several years and am coming back to general music. While in the process of trying to get "up to speed" on the different methodologies and reading several texts over the past year, I have found this to be an invaluable resource already. This book takes you through building a curriculum step by step, how to choose songs/material based on the folk culture of your community, how to achieve music literacy and how to go about formulating lessons. This book is definately worth the money!
This book has everything! June 27, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! Everything I need for my curriculum is here from goals for grade level instruction to specific and detailed teaching strategies. This method of Kodaly instruction is so much better than my series textbooks. Its more comprehensive, efficient and my students really like it. Kodaly Today gives you all the tools to put together a complete curriculum. All of the songs are included and arranged into several helpful lists. The teaching strategies are laid out in detail for lesson planning. If you are a music teacher, you need to have this book.
Kodaly Bible June 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book provides an extremely comprehensive approach to teaching elementary music, and in a manner that addresses the needs of all kinds of learners (kinesthetic, aural, and visual). The most essential (and age appropriate) music concepts are presented by grade level, and the authors even had the thoughtful consideration to plan them month to month. The templates for lesson planning are very helpful and are designed to prepare, present, and practice new and known songs, games, and ideas. "Kodaly Today" is an invaluable resource that should be in every music teacher's library.
As Kodaly would have wanted it. June 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The ultimate resource for any music teacher. This is not the Kodaly method as I knew it, but is so much better. The lesson planning guides are helpful yes, but the chapter on building musicianship skills is fantastic, and will not just challenge the students but you as well. If you wish to become the best music teacher you must buy this book, it's so inexpensive for the size and amount of information contained within. I've had my copy about 2 weeks and it is already dog eared, post-it noted, and (gasp!) written in all over.
