Guitar Handbook Is a Keeper October 26, 1997 41 out of 41 found this review helpful
While refurbishing a used electric guitar (a Gibson Flying V), I needed circuit diagrams and a friend lent me his copy of The Guitar Handbook. After reading a few pages, I didn't want to give it back! The book's brilliance lies in its economical use of language, diagrams and photos. It's as though Ralph Denyer and his editors are telepathic; knowing exactly what the reader needs and wants to know about guitars and guitar playing. Every page is a gold mine, illuminating topics I thought would be boring -- for example, complex music theory. Truly inspirational, the book unveils the once-daunting mysteries of music, including technical vocabulary, and still manages to stay down to earth. Listen to this quote: "Many guitarists--especially those that are self-taught--are suspicious of scales and regard them as an unattractive and unnecessary discipline. This is untrue." I've been rocking for 20 years and now my 16-year-old daughter is teaching me to sight-read music! One word of advice: if you expect to keep your copy of The Guitar Handbook, don't lend it to a guitar player.
I haven't found a better book yet. October 10, 1997 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book has HEAPS of good stuff in it. To me it is a must. I picked up HEAPS of stuff from this book. I picked up heaps of stuff that people used to try unsuccessfully to expain to me. And I learnt heaps of new chords and taught myself how to write music and I learnt how to read tab. It was cool!
The One Book Every Guitarist Should Own August 27, 1997 If I was stuck on a desert island with my guitar and could only have one book, it would be The Guitar Handbook by Ralph Denyer.Being primarily a self-taught musician, I needed a reference to fill in all my gaps of understanding about guitar fundamentals and music theory for guitar. The Guitar Handbook did that and more. Ralph Denyer's presentation of the material is clear, concise and well organized. It's also entertaining - the inside stories about today's guitar innovators and their advice to guitar players is fun and informative reading.
Everything you ever wanted to know about guitar... August 23, 1997 This is the best all-around guitar book I've ever seen! You would have to buy many, many books to get the same information contained in this manual. I got so sick of borrowing it from the library over and over again that I had to buy it myself. Do yourself a favor and BUY this book
Practice all your life and you'll learn half of the book June 15, 1997 This book is not JUST the best method book learning and master the guitar, it is althe ONLY book that I have ever seen that doesn't need to suggest additional readings. A perfect balance of theory, method, and history. I've been playing guitar for five years, and I've doubled my playing ability simply by reading some of this book
