4 out of 5 stars The Guitar Handbook   September 1, 2005

Excellent book for the beginner and anyone who wants to learn more about music theory. There was some, what I thought to be, wasted pages on guitar styles and how electric guitars and amplifiers work. The instructional part of the book however, was very good. Plenty of scales, modes, and chords. I would suggest reading the instructionl parts several times and then getting with someone who really knows what they're doing to have them kind of explain the parts you can't understand; as some of this stuff was a little over my head.

3 out of 5 stars Keep in mind the mistakes.........   July 19, 2005

Everyone here is giving five stars, but I recently bought this 1992 (revised) edition off amazon, replacing the previous edition that I had 20 years ago which was nicked by one of my friends.

If you really know music, you will see that there are now lots of editorial errors. for example, on the MODULATION page, it says:

"You could change straight from C to G, since the vertical columns show that G is both the dominant (V) in the key of C and the root (I) in the key of C and the sub-dominant (IV) in the key of G.."

I assure you that:

G is the dominant (V) in the key of C
but

G is not the root (I) in the key of C
and furthermore

G is not the sub-dominant (IV) in the key of G..

the author meant:

"You could change straight from C to G, since the vertical columns show that G is both the dominant (V) in the key of C and the root in the key of G.. and C is the subdominant in the key of G"

These erors are perhaps to be expected in our age of computer grammercheck. If you know your chord theory you can sort that out with a red pen after scratching your head for a while, but if you don't, you are going to be lost.

I also find mislabeled chord diagrams like the seventh augmented fifth fingering on page 127. It says root note on the 5th string but the root is on the second (A) string, and the intervals are labeled upside down. from top 3rd,b7th,#5th,1st? No: 1st,#5th, 3rd, b7th.

What can I say? it is dissapointing and again a beginner is going to be stuck here. Nevertheless it is and has always been a great book.

If you are a beginner and purchase it, just keep in mind that there are errors, but if you are buying this to replace your old copy, maybe better wait till a new edition comes out, and I hope the publisher doesn't make the cover any thinner.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE GUATARIST'S BIBLE!!!   March 8, 2005

No decent self-respecting guitar player should be without this book. I don't care if you only started playing today or if you are B.B. King or Eric Clapton, this book should be in your library.

This book covers everything from the history of guitar, to playing guitar, to some very deep music theory, to stage and sound setup, and wraps up with a very nice chord dictionary. This is not a book you will cover in a weekend!!!! I have found what works best is to pick it up occasionally read a topic and work on it for awhile and then come back later and move on to the next topic. This book deals with guitar and music theory, it does not have any examples of playing music. So this book should be accompained by music tutorials of whatever level or style you are focusing on. If you are starting off or have some experience and are looking to improve I recommend Hal Leonard's Guitar Method - Complete Edition.

I cannot put this book down for very long, I frequently find myself re-reading previous topics and always able to learn something new. This book is layed out with each topic completely independent of the rest of the book. So you can just flip it open and read on any topic, or can skip entire sections and read what interests you.

5 out of 5 stars I'll bet every one of today's top guitarists has this.   January 25, 2005

Well, you heard me. Everything has been explained, I'm just here to lend it more praise. This is a great book for any guitarist, either amateur or beginner. All I can say is that if you're learning to play, get this book. It will make many things seem so much easier.

5 out of 5 stars The One Guitar Book You Must Buy!   July 20, 2004

I bought this book seven years ago and still find it valid today. It is the most complete guitar book I have come across yet. Not only does it offer insight to guitar design and players who revolutionized it, it also has sections devoted to playing the guitar and maintainence. If you are a beginner I would really suggest this book. It teaches you how to start off and what to look for in a guitar. As you progress as a guitar player, you will find other "guitar primers" you can buy will eventually collect dust on your shelf because their scope is limited. However, with the Guitar Handbook, it covers a wide range of topics. When I got this book I had no idea what some of the stuff in it meant. Over time as I grew as a guitarist it finally started to come together. Sorry for such a long review but it's a really great book and I really recommend it!
