The Guitar Compendium - Without Question. September 6, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If there is one book that truly sums up the daunting task of learning the guitar's every aspect from A-Z, this is it. No stone is left unturned. Every page is overflowing with diagrams and illustrations that are quite precise in their point.Futhermore, there are no wasted words, and page space for that matter - this book comes close to perfection in it's layout as well as it's rich and diverse content. Everything I can think of is covered: It goes beyond my words to accurately describe the incredible amount of forethought put into this book. A++++++++++++++
Absolutely The Best Guitar Book August 9, 2002 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Having recently purchased a Stratocaster with Marshall amp after years of not playing, I needed a refresher on my chosen instrument. What a wealth of information I found in this fabulously illustrated and organized book.Once I picked this book up I couldn't put it down. It covers about everything you wanted to know that is related to guitar playing. The author gives you a concise bio of 20 different legendary guitar players, a complete background of guitar manufacturing and specs, guitar playing, maintenance and repair, soundstage and recording. You can jump around to whatever chapter interests you and read it in any order you desire. Every single page is filled with information and no paper is wasted in this book. I challenge anyone to show me a guitar book that does a better job. I've looked at a lot of them and this one is in a class by itself.
Good coverage on key concepts January 12, 2002 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you're interested in learning about guitars, this book covers a variety of topics, including how to play the guitar, history of the guitar, some early influences, types of guitars, and how they work. Concepts are laid out in an easy-to-read format that gives enough information without including too much detail, so the book never gets boring.
Mini-Encyclopedia of the Guitar December 8, 2001 The book is extensive, though not exhaustive, in its coverage of the history and description of the guitar, important and influential guitarists, teaching of basic chords, theory, etc. The photos are excellent, as are the cutaway illustrations of various guitar types. Understandably (after all, Andy Summers is co-author), there seems to be more emphasis on electric guitars, their accessories and proponents; but those of us who prefer the acoustic path should not feel left out at all--there's plenty for everyone! A great book to browse or to keep on one's coffee table.
Complete as possible November 3, 2001 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book examines all aspects of guitar. No, thats wrong....All aspects of talented guitar. There is no Korn, Rage against the machine, or other (...). From country finger picking to blues slide guitar, there is all in here. You get little quotes and tips from GREAT guitar players like Eric Johnson, Keith Richards, and the great gonzo motor city madman, Mr. 10 fingers of doom, the Predator Teditor Editor, terrible Ted Nugent. --insert lighters and screams--good book if you are learning. a lot of theory.
