5 out of 5 stars Like Rent?? Buy the Book!   November 13, 2000

This book is a must- have for anyone who enjoyed the show Rent. It tells the story of how rent came to be, starting with a biography of Jonathan Larson, the man behind the show. It has in- depth interviews with Jonathan's family, friends, and any affiliates who were involved in the creation of Rent. It also includes colorful photos and interviews of the original cast members of Rent, so any Taye Diggs or Adam Pascal fans may want to add this book to their collection. Included in the book is the Liberetto for the play, complete with all the lines, lyrics, and even some stage direction. If you are a fan of rent, this book is something you MUST own! Amaze your friends with your complete and detailed knowledge of this fabulous show!

4 out of 5 stars For die-hard fans   November 12, 2000

This book may be a bit overwhelming for anyone who isn't completely devoted to Jonathan Larson's Rent. The book is huge, and designed with a similar disarray to that present in the posters of the OBC. It takes you behind the writing process and into the mind of Jonathan Larson, who always seemed so brilliant and so mysterious. You get a look at close look at Rent from the time it was being concieved (Larson's notes are included), to its birth at the NYC Theatre Workshop and you can watch it mature to the stellar Broadway production just by turning the pages. It's full of great photos, and you can even get your hands a the Liberetto! Well worth it for a true fan, this book makes the show seem even more real than most Broadway plays.

5 out of 5 stars if you're a fan, this is a must-have   July 10, 2000

After having seen RENT several times, but never having been able to see the OBC, reading this book was like taking a walking tour of backstage during the days of the original cast. But not only that, it gave me so much more information on how Jonathan came up with the story and how the characters became who they are. It details very carefully and lovingly who Mr. Larson was, how he spent his time and the evolution of his idea. This book is chock-full of interesting, encouraging, and insightful information, and if you're a fan, not necessarily a total RENThead, but just anyone who wants to know a bit more about the show, I highly recommend this beautifully-put together book.

I saw RENT in 1997 in St. Paul at the Ordway. I fell in love with it. I'm a nineteen year old now, but it meant a lot to me as a teenager to see something so beautiful put on stage. When I saw this book sitting on the shelf I had to have it! I added to my collection of musicals and soundtracks. It almost never leaves my side-I read some of it every night. Jonathan Larson was an artist in every sense of the word. It gives me hope. RENT brightens my ordinary and usually boring life.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book to the Perfect Show!   May 4, 2000

Jonathon Larson's musical creation RENT is awesome. It is truly a tragedy that he passed away before the play had it's big opening on Broadway. This book takes you through Jonathon Larson's hard life while he was writing RENT. It follows through the procedures of casting, rehearsing, and the actual productions. It comes with a complete Libretto with on-stage pictures that are truly wonderfully photographed and put together on the page. There are also many cast and crew comments about the show: rehearsals, casting, the production; about the tragic death of Jonathan Larson; and about the man himself.

I have been a (I guess you'd call it a RENThead for a while now and I'm proud of it. I love the beauty of the music, the acting, the very UNshallow storyline, and ultimately, the experience. I absolutely love Jonathan Larson's exquisite creation and I KNOW you will too! Enjoy!
