La Vie Boheme February 25, 2006 With the recent release of the movie version of "RENT," this book about the Broadway musical "RENT" should sell quickly. The book is a colorful collection of photographs, lyrics, and stories behind the musical. It is a printed version of the behind-the-scenes documentary featured on the "RENT" DVD Special Features section.
The story of "RENT" is about 8 struggling artists and friends in the Lower East Side of NYC during the 1990's. Tackling controversial issues of the AIDS epidemic and homosexuality, this rock musical has been referred to as the "Hair" of the 1990's generation.
Jonathan Larson, writer and composer of "RENT," unexpectedly died on the night of the final dress rehearsal. Fortunately for us, his message of "No day but today," lives on.
RENT January 22, 2006 This book is perfect for any fan of the show RENT or any musical theatre fan. In a documentry format the book does a wonderful job telling you the story of Jonatha Larson's life and the time he spend writing the rock opera RENT. This book does a wonderfull job telling you the wonderful and interisting back story of one of the most interisting musicals to come out in the past decade. It's compleat with a scrip of the entier show including the dialouge not included on the album and quotes from the cast producers and director and Larson's parents about certin events in the shows creation period. a MUST HAVE for any fan of RENT like i said. This coffee table book contanes probally THE most interistng creation storys of a peice of theatre that I have ever read and I have read a lot. I have also seen the show 14 times and still plan to see it as many times as i can
Don't Rent...Own December 15, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the perfect book, on an amazing musical. I found the history of the production, especially the background on Larson to be fascinating, I really could not put it down, and the pictures are well selected, this book really does this iconoclastic musical justice and that really is saying something..if you have any interest in great musicals and/or just love Rent, then you should own this book. I was really skeptical when I first went to see Rent..it had gotten so much hype and though I thought the soundtrack was incredible, I just for whatever reason put off seeing the show..but when I saw it I was blown away, it met the hype and then some, I really did not think the subject matter would hold up over time, but now I believe, like La Boheme, it is timeless. We all hope, like with Consumption, we will find a cure for A.I.D.S. and soon, but until that day, Rent will continue to keep the image of this insideous disease in our minds and hearts, along with the uplifting hope that maybe one day this disease will be irradicated, and that the Angel's of today will live and flourish.
Pretty good... September 30, 2005 2 out of 15 found this review helpful
This book really is nice, and the pictures are great, except there are WAY too many pictures of Angel and hardly not even enough of Mimi, the main focus in Rent. Other than that, this book conatins a libretto, which is good if you cant understand what they say on the soundtrack, and things like behind the scenes. I have to say its nice to have, but could do wtihout.
RENT RENT RENT RENT RENT/ WE'RE NOT GONNA PAY RENT!!! September 11, 2005 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
Fans of Rent, this "IS" a must-have book. You have the script, the lyrics and behind the scenes story. I loved the musical. I have enjoyed seeing RENT "six" times, three times in Seattle and three times in NYC. This story is so alive with life, passions, feelings, relationships, communications, and our society. In short, Rent is about love and loyalty. The musical score is awesome; No Day But Today.
