RENT it, buy it, just get it. April 22, 2002 I've been a fan of RENT since the day a friend played the soundtrack for me. I adore the play, and when I got ahold of the book, I adored it even more. I finally realized how much work was really put into getting RENT out to the audience. I was especially pleased to see that no one thought they had to be extra nice when speaking of Jonathan Larson. They admitted he was pushy and demanding when it came to adjusting the play. I was glad to see that he was so committed to his vision that he fought to keep it as close as he could to what he wanted. At the same time, there are moments of plain sweetness to be seen. The pictures are wonderful. Including the note Jonathan wrote his father when he quit his job, and the shots from the stage. The picture of Collins and Angel is enough to make the book completely worth it. Wonderful for anyone who likes to see how behind-the-scenes really was as the group was getting ready for the performance.
A fantastic reference January 11, 2002 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I feel really disadvantaged as RENT has only been to my home town once on a tour. Also, books about it are really hard to get in the UK. Thank god for this book! It's brilliant! I know im never going to let it out of my sight. It's so detailed, with a biography on the original cast, the COMPLETE script, and loads of stuff about Johnathan Larson. No day like today!
A must own for RENT fans January 2, 2002 I always wondered if the book was worth the money for a show I had only seen once, but after receiving it as a gift and continuing to see the show a few more times I am so appreciative of having it on my shelf. This book is far more than a program. It captures the style and excitement of the show in its layout, photos, and writings and also does a nice job of explaining the history and meaning behind the show. If you love the play, this book will help satisfy your passion for the work.
Excellent book December 9, 2001 I have seen the Broadway musical (yes, on Broadway) four times. I saw it the first time in November 1996, with much of the original cast. This is an excellent musical, and very innovative. It has a lot of energy and the music is very nice. I got the original cast CD and listen to it quite often (enough that I can sing the lyrics to some of the songs...)Get this book to learn the gestation of this innovative musical.
