Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory May 12, 2008 I think this book is amazing! It has the correct answers in the back of the book, in case you are unsure, and it teaches you step by step. The two CDs that are included are for the "ear training" parts inside the book. I've learned more with this book than I did in College, but in all fairness, I did not finish college :-) I would definitely recommend this book!
Essentials of music theory is a good book. March 3, 2008 Watch out for the 2 cds they are not firmly attached and I lost one.
MUSIC THEORY BY ALFRED December 22, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I 'VE JUST START LEARNING TO PLAY INSTRUMENT SINCE JANUARY 2007.MOST OF MY FRIENDS AND MY TEACHER TOLD ME TO BUY A MUSIC THEORY IF I WANT TO BE ABLE TO IMPROVE MY SKILLS BY READING MUSIC....SINCE I HAVE PURCHASED THIS BOOK,MY KNOWLEDGES IN MUSIC HAVE IMPROVED AND I DON'T HAVE NO MORE PROBLEM TO WRITE MY SONG ON MUSIC SHEET.IF YOUR A BEGINNER AS I,PLEASE PURCHASE THIS BOOK AND THE COST IS WORTHLESS.I WILL KEEP THIS BOOK FOR GOOD AND PASS IT TO MY KIDS.....EVERYTHING IS CLEAR AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND....
Good workbook-style resource August 6, 2007 I wrote a review of this and several other books for an upcoming article in Classical Singer Magazine. This is a good workbook-style resource for getting a headstart on your theory; goes from basic to early advanced topics. The only thing I would have liked to see in it was more composition exercises, but that's my bias as a composer.
Good for music fundamentals or review July 29, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I used this to brush up before taking music theory. It's a decent review of the fundamentals of music. If you are completely unfamiliar, you might want something a bit more comprehensive. If you know basic theory, this is probably a waste of your time.
