Just A Moment In The Woods September 1, 1998 Tonys aren't everything. Just becausee "Into The Woods" won three Tony awards proves nothing about it's musical content. Just listen to the cast recording of "Grand Hotel" for proof that three Tonys can honor a poor theatrical work. But, "Into The Woods" more than earns every accolade it has ever received. Bernadette Peters is brilliant (she should have been Tony number four, but that would have bumped Joanna Gleason), and the rest of the cast is similarly stunning. Though other Sondheim compositions may be more significant ("Assassins" and "Anyone Can Whistle" to name only two), none of his musicals are as enjoyable as this show. And the Grammy-Winning recording does the peice justice, surprisingly. It is a fun romp in a mystical land, but it is not lacking for meaning or subversive terror. The conclusion that "no one is alone" is much more profound than any happily ever after could dream....
Sondheim's Greatest July 22, 1998 This is a must have from head to toe. It captures the magic from several fairy tales and rolls them into one. I have been familer with this musical since I was young and I have always loved it. Joanna Gleason and Bernadette Peters are faboulos as well as the rest of the cast. It won 3 Tonys so that just proves it is great.
beautiful Broadway musical July 5, 1998 This CD captures the essence of one of the most beautiful musicals. It addresses how human nature longs for what they do not/cannot have, and if they have what they always wanted, the still long for more. "Wishes may bring problems, such that you regret them. Better that, though, than to never get them..."
Morality and fun mixed into one!!! July 3, 1998 Sondheim's delightful way with words brings classic childhood fairy tales to new life, but beware -- the tales he tells derive from the original, NOT Disney, versions. The twist here is that he offers an answer to the rarely asked, and never-answered, question: What actually happens "ever after", and is it necessarily "happily"? Is Cinderella's Prince an honest-to-God (or the only) Prince Charming? If Jack must slay a giant to save his own hide, would the giant's wife accept that as self-defense? And what of a person's mental stability when facing the real world after being locked in a tower her entire life, with only her golden hair as access to other human beings? The songs are as intricately interwoven as the tales are themselves, as all characters (more than just those named above) eventually cross each other's paths. Some individual lyrics fall into the trap of, "Well, it rhymes, even if it doesn't make much sense", and we do get a bit banged over the head with some of the more cautionary/morality-based tales. But all in all, the musical is tightly written, infused with quandary and self-questioning, and a lot of humor. (Personal favorites are the Wolf's "Hello Little Girl" and the Princes' equally disturbing "Agony".) Plus, they're fairy tales! They're always fun! Of course, the show in its entirety (i.e., ON VIDEO) is more fulfilling, but even just on CD, the remarkable performances stand out. Each time, I marvel at a performer to whom I hadn't previously given enough credit. I've seen and heard it so many times now, the next people on my list must necessarily be the lighting technicians.
Great music, Stephen Sondheim masterpiece, B. Peters shines! June 13, 1998 This is a great showcase of Stephen Sondheim's talent. The cast is delightful to listen to and Bernadette Peters is wonderfully cast as the witch. I recommend this selection for anyone who loves American stage musicals at their best!
