One of the Best you'll ever Buy April 20, 2006 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
As soon as I bought the book I could not put it down I read it from top to bottom non-stop. This book is an easy read and very applicable. I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. It was a great buy along with a couple of manuals I purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit.
Great Asset, Buy It February 17, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I discovered "This Business of Marketing & Promotion" in the midst of a music marketing course and it played a huge part in my being able to market effectively and objectively. It's a great tool for un-signed musicians as well, as this updated edition taps into E-Marketing, as well as effective ways to get your music from the garage to the hands of fans and/or record labels. That said, it also gives you an inside look at what record labels are looking for including financial windows, time constraints, and media exposure.
The book helped me create a marketing plan from scratch, and gave me many ideas on how to market & promote an artist and continue that development throughout his/her career. It was awesome.
An excellent book. December 1, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
When I read this book, I'd already been working in music marketing for several years. Someone had asked me for recommendations on music marketing books, and I hadn't read any in quite awhile, so I read through a few. I thought the book was great. I like that it was written in a straightforward and clear-cut manner.
I have some news: Music Marketing is about as much exciting as toilet paper marketing or coffee cup marketing. You're looking at the same basic strategies of marketing and promotion. I don't expect for a book like this to be something of a great read. If I want to read something fascinating, a marketing strategy book is generally NOT the first place I go.
However, if you're trying to learn something about the real nuts and bolts of marketing, this is the place to look. It reads much like any Marketing 101 textbook with a slant toward music. That's what you need, not a 15-chapter long book on psychological strategies regarding getting your friends to hang posters for you.
This Business of Marketing & Promotion September 29, 2005 2 out of 20 found this review helpful
I did receive "This Business of Marketing & Promotion" book okay, but this is a duplicate copy. So now I have 2 books under this same title. My original order was for this book and "Music, Money, and Success" by the Brabec brothers. I never received the Brabec brothers book. All you did was to keep sending me messages if I wanted to continue the search for this book. So, someone in your organization decided to send me another copy of "This Business of..." for some reason. Sounds to me like something is amiss in your ordering system.
If You Buy One Music Biz Book, THIS IS IT! May 18, 2005 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I am both the owner of a music industry marketing company (http://www.ontargetmediagroup.com) and a teacher at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, and I use this book heavily in both capacities. This is required reading for all of my students!
When I first bought the book, I used many ideas from it to structure my company. I quickly realized that although the advice and knowledge in here is 100% professional, it is just as useful for someone getting started in the biz.
This book influences a lot of my entries in my blog, http://www.musicbusinessblog.com as well. There is so much info in here about all aspects of marketing and promoting in the music industry, if you are going to buy ONE book and ONE book only, then let this be it!
