5 out of 5 stars the most inclusive music book I've ever seen. Bravo!   January 4, 2006

Michael W. Dean's $30 Music School is the best book on this subject I've encountered. Mr. Dean (Dr. Dean?) covers every aspect of music-making: the politics of bands, writing songs, getting gear, practice spaces, booking shows, recording, making cds, the music business and the internet, and touring are all addressed at length in a personal, avuncular style that is always inspiring to read. Mr. Dean's enthusiasm is infectious. His DIY aesthetic is uncompromising but his attitude couldn't be more positive. This is a book for people who want to get out there and start living their art life instead of merely thinking about it. I've been a musician for over 20 years and every chapter in this book fired my imagination. If you read this book and don't feel inspired to begin or reinvigorate a DIY music career, you probably have a different calling altogether. I'm hoping he writes a sequel (graduate school?) that addresses many of these subjects at greater length. In the meantime, I'm on my own! Ha! If you liked this book, check out the others in the $30 music school series as well as Mr. Dean's fiction works and his film D.I.Y. or Die. Hooray for Michael Dean for doing so much of the hard work for the rest of us!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!   October 2, 2005

This book, like Michael Dean's other two books, $30 Film School & $30 Writing School, is the best book ever written about its subject: independent musicmaking. This book is unbelieveable. I have not read it cover-to-cover (like I have with $30 Film School), but rather only one or two chapters, and they were enough to convince me to buy this book. This book is AWESOME! Buy it now!

P.S. $30 is a GREAT deal. If the author were a fluffy big studio-esque writer, this book would cost over a hundred dollars.

5 out of 5 stars Caffeine for musical motivationaly challenged.   July 11, 2005
This book caught my eye on the shelf with it's title $30 Dollar Music school. Me being on a budget, and really wanting to put some of my music out there, I gave it a good read. The class was worth more than thirty dollars folks. Not only is the book full of knowledge for the naive musician, but there is an underlying philosophy within its pages. It's the gospel for the underground man. Not only does he give you the tools to get the machine running, he explains routine maintenance, and preventive medicine for it. If you're in a band, or you're an artist that feels ready to unveil your art to the masses, this is a great place to find the roadmap to the goal. I am now in the process of putting it into action, and very pleased with my results so far. If you're real, motivated, and looking for direction, then the road begins on the first page. Buy it! I did and I'm just beginning my journey. Check out my preliminary results at http://www.matthewbuchanan.com

5 out of 5 stars Want to be a true Musician ?   March 22, 2005
As I read through the first couple of chapters i was begining to get skeptical about how this guy was a success. I instantly tried to pin him to a sterotype... but in all honestly this guy fits no stereo type he is an artist and an independant one at that. His Book is a no nonsense get to the point book that poses several questions.

The dude is totally hardcore about his art. This isn't a "read this book and be famous." Not at all don't buy it if think that. This is end all beat all book to understanding the mindset of a true musician as Michael Dean puts it Make Music,Promote your art... this is probably the most informative book on understanding the Business side of music
i have ever read if it could be rated more 5 stars i would do it in a heart beat. If you posses the ability to read and also have a small ammount of talent you should read it.

5 out of 5 stars Look no further   December 21, 2004
Every human being should be a musician. Sound crazy? Well, get over it! All you need is your own desire and the assurance from a great book like "$30 Music school" to let you know that it's all right there for you. Michael Dean gets right down to it. D.I.Y. (do it yourself) or DIE is the only way. Don't ever let anyone tell you your art isn't good enough. Follow your heart and when you falter or think it just won't work, pick up this book, read it, believe it and get back to work. It's up to you. That is what I learned from this book and the $30 Film school.
