Rockin' Mom of 3 January 27, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just received this book and it is great. I am a mom of 3 and took up playing the guitar 2 yrs ago. I wanted to learn some rock guitar to impress the kids and their friends. Last night I was rocking along to the first track. I didn't really understand the rock guitar thing until now. Great book!
Nice collection of exercises January 13, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Nice collection of songs, well explained, fun to play. Glad I bought it.
Total Rock Guitar - Not really a complete guide August 3, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Total Rock Guitar falls a little bit short regarding the promise of the subtitle to be "A Complete Guide to Learning Rock Guitar." However, if you already know the basics and have some practice, there are a lot of little treasures hidden on the 96 pages ... and even more treasures on the included CD. The tracks are made to learn from in the beginning and to use as your personal "sparring garage band" to jam with later on. In a nutshell, a good book for a guitar player who knows his chords and scales - and maybe some first riffs and licks - and now wants to know what really to do with that knowledge in a rockin' enviroment.
Highly recommended! February 25, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Total Rock Guitar: Great book, offering a nice overview of a variety of rock styles. The songs are great and follow a nice progression in difficulty. My only suggestion is that I would have preferred that the whole solos would have been included at a slower tempo, not only the main licks. I also feel that the theory discussions before the songs are to brief, and I feel that Troy Stetina assumes that you have some understanding of music theory and many music concepts are presume to be understood. For example, in the first lesson a Fourth is define as "the music interval or distance, of four scales steps", so you better know already about music intervals within a scale. In other words, if a have not read "Music Principles for the Skeptical Guitarist" by Bruce Emery before buying Total Rock Guitar I would have been somewhat lost in various lessons. However, this is the best rock guitar book I have ever used, and you will be playing great rhythm parts and solos in just a few lessons. I highly recommended this book.
